WILTSHIRE MICROLIGHT CENTRE
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
None whatsoever. Most students start with absolutely no aviation background.
Yes — the Ikarus C42 has a fully enclosed cockpit with side-by-side seating, excellent visibility, and modern avionics.
Training is conducted with qualified instructors in properly maintained aircraft, with safety forming the foundation of every lesson.
This varies hugely between students depending on weather, availability, budget, and how frequently lessons are taken.
Absolutely — visitors are always welcome at the airfield and Flight Deck.
You do not need special flying clothing — comfort is the main thing. Wear practical clothes suited to the weather, and it is wise to bring layers, as conditions can change through the day. A light jacket can be helpful on cooler days, and sunglasses are often useful in summer. For footwear, flat, sensible shoes or trainers are best. Please avoid open-toed shoes, sandals, flip-flops, or high heels, as they are not suitable around aircraft.
Yes — well-behaved dogs are welcome at Wiltshire Microlight Centre. However, as this is a live operational airfield, we do ask owners to think carefully about whether dogs really need to come along, particularly on busy flying days.
Aircraft propellers can be extremely dangerous, aircraft may move unexpectedly, and there is often a lot happening around the airfield environment.
For everyone’s safety:
Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times
Dogs must remain under close control at all times
Dogs are not permitted on the apron or active aircraft operating areas
Dogs are not permitted inside aircraft or on the Flight Deck areas unless specifically authorised
Safety always comes first. Because our flights are VFR only, we may need to delay or rearrange if visibility, cloud, wind, or other conditions are not suitable. If that happens, we will work with you to find another convenient time to fly.
VFR (Visual Flight Rules) is a method of flying where the pilot navigates primarily by looking outside the aircraft. Rather than relying solely on instruments, pilots use visual references such as landmarks, the horizon, and other aircraft to maintain their position and avoid hazards. To fly under VFR, the weather must provide sufficient visibility and cloud clearance to allow pilots to safely see and avoid terrain, obstacles, and other air traffic.
Yes, aircraft hire and hangarage are both available, subject to availability. We offer a range of storage options, from fully rigged hangarage to external covered and open tie-down spaces, and are happy to discuss enquiries with pilots and owners.
We provide microlight flight training to the NPPL(m) syllabus, with instruction in both 3-axis and flexwing aircraft. Whether you are taking your first steps into aviation or working towards a licence, training is shaped around steady progress, sound airmanship, and a friendly learning pace.
If you are arriving by road then please feel free to visit us anytime during our opening hours.
If you are visiting by air then flights are by arrangement and PPR is required. As we operate from a live airfield and all flying is VFR, booking ahead helps us make sure the airfield, aircraft, and instructor availability are all in order for your visit.
PPR (Prior Permission Required) means that pilots must contact the airfield and obtain permission before flying in. This ensures they receive the latest information on runway conditions, local procedures, and any operational restrictions, helping to keep both visitors and based aircraft safe.
